Follow-up to ISO TC 228 Bangkok Meeting

Ever since ISO set up a Technical Committee (TC 228) to develop international standards for tourism services IH&RA has lobbied hard for the exclusion of "accommodation and catering" from the scope of this Committee. However, at the 2nd annual meeting of TC228 held in Bangkok on 26-27 February, ISO confirmed that it would not formally exclude accommodation and catering from the scope of the TC while stating that the proposed TC Business Plan would comprise only those work items "where there is known support amongst stakeholders".

The meeting then discussed the Business Plan drafted in 2006 and called on participants to submit comments on the revised document by 15 April. All organisations in liaison were invited to submit a statement to be annexed to the Business. IH&RA has complied with this request and submitted both formal comments and textual changes to the Business Plan. The new Business Plan must be ready for submission to the ISO Technical Management Board by September in time for adoption at the next annual meeting of the TC.

The meeting also reviewed the activities of the Spa Working Group which had met in Madrid in October. Participants pointed out that the meeting had been attended by representatives of National Standards Bodies who did not support drafting standards for Spa Services, while the countries which had voted in favour had not come to the meeting. In the absence of a formal agenda for the next meeting of the Spa Services Working Group, originally scheduled for mid-March, the TC agreed to defer that meeting to a later date which has not yet been advised.

The next annual meeting of the TC will be held in Marbella, Spain, in February 2008.
