An ILO tripartite meeting was held in Geneva, September 24-27, to examine the impact of global foodchains on employment. These Tri-partite meetings are so called because they bring together representatives of governments, employees (trade unions) and employers (employer associations).
The meeting was initially called by the ILO Governing Body to examine all sectors in the global foodchain, i.e. from agriculture to retail and restaurants. In the light of criticism expressed by the Employer group, specifically concerning the technical and practical difficulties of tackling such a vast subject, ILO agreed last summer that it was desirable to re-focus the meeting on the food processing sector. As a result the scope of the meeting was narrowed, eliminating catering and restaurants.
Despite some last-minute concern, foodservice and catering were not discussed at the meeting which focused on agriculture and food processing.
The report of the meeting will be circulated to IH&RA Members as soon as it becomes available and will be posted on the ILO website (www.ilo.org)
