IH&RA, HOTREC and other industry bodies strongly lobbied against the inclusion of hotel and accommodation in the ISO TC228 Scope of Activity. The ‘working group’ voted in favour of a resolution to exclude Accommodation and Catering from the TC’s Scope of Work as sought by IH&RA and HOTREC. ISO Update: ISO TC228 has voted to include spa services in its work despite strong opposition from some national standards bodies. IH&RA will participate in the TC’s work to press home why the hospitality industry opposes this initiative and to provide pertinent technical input from around the globe.

Unfortunately for the hospitality industry, the EU Advocate General issued an opinion in July 2006 that communication by means of TV sets in hotel bedrooms constitutes "communication to the public". As a result, this communication should be subject to copyright fees. The EU Court of Justice is expected to rule on this in the autumn.

Work is proceeding on the joint ILO-IH&RA International Worker Mobility Programme initiated last year with the support of a consortium of international agencies covering labour and migration issues. A Pilot Project involving 25,000 workers has been agreed and Phase One ‘receiving’ and ‘sending’ countries were identified in the course of a meeting of the consortium at ILO headquarters in June this year. The IH&RA is currently working with the ILO in Lebanon to place displaced workers into jobs with Shangri-La in their Middle East properties. Click here to read the update.
